What is IELTS?

IELTS is an English language exam that can be used for study, migration, or jobs. Every year, over three million people take our test. More than 10,000 employers, universities, schools, and immigration authorities around the world recognise IELTS.

IELTS Test Types

IELTS is divided into two categories: Academic and General Training. Both assessments measure the listening, reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English.

For more detail on each exam, see the sections below.

IELTS Academic

The IELTS Academic test is designed for students who want to study at a university or in an English-speaking environment (higher education). IELTS Academic can also be used for professional registration.

The exam determines whether or not you are prepared to begin learning in English. It contains terminology that is commonly used in academic settings.

IELTS General Training

The IELTS General Training exam is sufficient for those applying to study at a lower level than a bachelor’s degree. An English-speaking school or college falls under this category. It may also be used for work experience or other types of training in the workplace.

For migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, IELTS General Training is also required. The test covers basic English language skills that you’ll need in social and professional settings.

Which IELTS test type is right for me?

You can take the IELTS Academic test if you want to study in an English-speaking country.

The IELTS General Training test is recommended for work or immigration.
